First Person
Belly Dancing on the Broadkill River
by Karla Pahel
August 22, 2007

The range of motion gets bigger
in the second chakra
where the color is deep reds and oranges
Hip scarves are jingling
over this, our base,
our hips,
our reproductive organs,
our center of creativity.
The teenage boys are casting their lines
moving into this sacra center
pelvic tucking and pulling in
out through the long windows,
where the boys are fishing off the bridge
pulling in,
below my naval,
figure eights we swim,
dive under,
to the roots here,
to this river, this small town,
once a ship building town,
filled with opaque shells of mermaids' toenails
where we are learning not cabaret,
but rather tribal styles.
